We, the residents and parents of over 400 High School children living in in the Helensburgh, Otford, Darkes Forest and Stanwell Tops region note and declare as follows:
Our children are commuting 2 hours and 20 minutes each day to and from the feeder High Schools – Heathcote High School and St John Bosco College, Engadine – due to the inadequate train timetable. This means they have far less time than other students at the schools for homework and other after school activities.
Train travel involves safety concerns. We want our children’s safety to be the highest of priorities. Large numbers of children standing at the station waiting for connecting services, pushing on and off crowded trains, is a major concern. Children walking between carriages on moving trains is also aserious risk. Trains no longer have any transport safety officers.
High School children from Helensburgh have a bus service to Bulli High School but there is no bus service for our children attending schools in Engadine and Heathcote.
Ease of access to education is a basic right, and the State Government should be doing more to allow our children to get to school safely and efficiently.
Therefore we call upon the NSW Government to provide a bus service for our children who commute to the feeder High Schools in the Heathcote/ Engadine area.
